If you are thinking of moving to new premises or updating existing, and are wondering how many toilets you need for an office per person, here is a handy guide to help with planning your work space:

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 governing sanitary conveniences states that:

  1. Suitable and sufficient sanitary conveniences shall be provided at readily accessible places.
  2. Without prejudice to the generality of paragraph (1), sanitary conveniences shall not be suitable unless -
    1. the rooms containing them are adequately ventilated and lit;
    2. they and the rooms containing them are kept in a clean and orderly condition; and
    3. separate rooms containing conveniences are provided for men and women except where and so far as each convenience is in a separate room the door of which is capable of being secured from inside.

The minimum number of facilities the Approved code of practice gives for the number of toilets and washbasins for mixed use (or women only) are:

1-5 people at work (1 toilet) (1 washbasin)

6-25 people at work (2 toilets) (2 washbasins)

26-50 people at work (3 toilets) (3 washbasins)

51-75 people at work (4 toilets) (4 washbasins)

76-100 people at work (5 toilets) (5 washbasins)

Toilets used by men only:

1-5 people at work (1 toilet) (1 urinal)

16-30 people at work (2 toilets) (1 urinal)

31-45 people at work (2 toilets) (2 urinals)

46-60 people at work (3 toilets) (2 urinals)

61-75 people at work (3 toilets) (3 urinals)

76-90 people at work (4 toilets) (3 urinals)

91-100 people at work (4 toilets) (4 urinals)

The number of people at work refers to the maximum number likely to be in the workplace at any one time.
